Conspicuos Orion culminates in the south at about midnight in December.
The bright star Rigel, Orions left foot, together with the brightest stars
of Canis Major, Canis Minor, Gemini, Auriga, and Taurus make up the
famous star pattern of the winter hexagon.
Leo, the lion, has risen in the east. Planet Mars can be found in Leo
in December 2011. But most prominent will be bright planet Jupiter
in Aries, south of Andromeda. The ringed planet Saturn will rise
considerably later. But bright Venus can be found just after sunset
at the southwestern horizon.
