The time lapse animation shows a short but very bright flare of Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) above the south german city of Tübingen. Energetic solar particles hit the upper atmosphere and excited the oxygen to glow in red lights in heights between 200 and 400 km and below in green lights from about 100 to 200 km. Unfortunately some clouds covered much of the auroral display.
